GENERAL FIRING SERVICE
Our General Firing service is open to the public. Work can be dropped off anytime that we are open provided that the form below form has been completed and submitted.
Work will not be accepted, unless the Firing Service form has been completed, for every type of firing you require (e.g. stoneware, bisque, earthernware & midfire) and indicating that you have read and agreed to our firing guidelines in the following link – FIRING GUIDELINES.
General Firing is a pre-paid service of $9 per kilo, per firing, with a minimum charge of $9 per firing. Your items will be weighed on site for payment.
General Firings available:
Bisque firing 960 – 1000°C (Cone 06)
Earthenware Glaze firing 1090°C (Cone 03)
Midfire Glaze firing 1200°C (Cone 5)
Stoneware Glaze firing 1280°C (Cone 9/10)
Unsure about what type of firing you need? All types of clay go through a minimum of TWO firings:
1st Firing – Once your work is completely dry, bring it in for a BISQUE firing. This is the first firing for all types of clay. Bisque firings are designed to dry out and harden the clay to create an even surface for decorating and glazing.
2nd Firing – Once you have collected your work and decorated it with glazes or other materials, you are ready for the second firing. This firing is designed to set the glazes and harden the clay to its most solid form. For a second firing YOU MUST select the type of firing that matches the clay you used. Eg. If you used stoneware clay and glazes you select stoneware firing, if you used earthenware clay and glazes, you select earthenware firing. This is very important as if you put the wrong clay into the wrong firing temperature, it can melt, damaging the kiln and other people’s work. You will also be liable to pay for any damaged equipment.
IF YOU ARE NOT SURE ABOUT WHAT TYPE OF FIRING YOU NEED TO DO – ASK OUR STAFF IN STORE.
What is BRT?
BRT or Buff Raku Trachyte – is a specific type of clay that when fired has a brown finish with very dark brown and black speckles. The name BRT will be very clearly marked on the packed of clay if it is this type. When fired to Midfire or Stoneware temperatures the dark speckles can bleed through and melt onto the kiln shelves. To avoid this, any work made of BRT must have a setter to sit on in the kiln. The setter is a small flat tile made of any other type of Midfire or Stoneware clay.
IF YOU ARE UNSURE IF YOU HAVE USED BRT OR HOW TO MAKE A SETTER – ASK OUR STAFF IN STORE
You will be sent an email when your pieces are available for pick-up. For daily kiln updates you can also follow our firing service @NPSkilns on Instagram.
Our firing service takes on average 7-14 days.
