Josefina Barcelo is a Chilean artist based in Melbourne. She has dedicated her last three years of art practice to working on ceramics.

While growing up in South America, Josefina was always exposed to local art, especially during the five years she spent at the Faculty of Arts studying a Bachelor. She felt instantly drawn to traditional Latin-American ceramics, particularly vases and bowls original to Mexico, Peru, and Argentina. The graphic representations on these objects inspired her to start working with underglazes, slips, decals, and glazes, in a way that she could also apply her drawings onto a ceramic piece. Her work is mainly hand-built and using press moulds.

She currently works as a studio assistant at Daisy Cooper’s studio, as well as in her own studio in Coburg. She has also participated at the Making Space Residency Program 2021, from the Moreland Council, and now has joined the Northcote Pottery Supplies tutor’s team.
