Northcote Pottery Supplies is committed to the development of teacher training and professional practice. We offer a range of professional development sessions to assist teachers in gathering the information and skills they require to deliver their educational programs.
Our sessions are designed to support teachers to deliver engaging lessons in accordance with Victorian Curriculum F-10, and develop best practice for using ceramics in the classroom, and kiln operation and maintenance.

*Ceramics & Glazing 101*
2.5 hours
$600 for up to 5 people + $75 per additional person up to maximum 10 participants.
This session covers everything you need to know about the ceramics process to enable you to work with clay in the classroom.
Using a combination of instruction and hands-on learning, our experienced tutors will take you through:
- Clay types & the ceramics process from wedging to firing
- Basic Wheel Throwing and Hand building techniques and how to teach them in the classroom
- Surface decoration, underglazes and glazing
- Ceramics problem solving
Each session can be tailored to support primary, secondary or kindergarten skill levels.
Sessions can be run at Northcote Pottery Supplies, or on site at your school. Cost is inclusive of a private specialised tutor and all clay and materials needed.
Each group will also receive a Teachers Pack that includes clay and decoration samples, our Ceramics Problem Solving guide, and 2021 Learning Resources.
*Kilns 101*
2 hours
$375 for 1-2 people

This session will give you the skills and knowledge to operate your kiln with confidence.
Using a combination of instruction and hands-on learning, our experienced tutors will take you through:
- Clay types & the Ceramics Process
- How to operate your kiln for Bisque firing and beyond
- Kiln Safety and Maintenance
- Troubleshooting: How to recognise and fix firing and glazing issues.
Sessions will be tailored to meet the needs of your individual kiln on site and can be run at Northcote Pottery Supplies, or at your school.
Alternatively we can also provide advice about purchasing a kiln based on your school’s goals and specifications, and assist with purchase, installation and training. For more information on this please email manager@northcotepotterysupplies.com.au

*Consultations*
We also provide individual or small group consultations for educators wanting sessions tailored to their specific needs.
Examples of sessions include:
- How to integrate ceramics into your curriculum & lesson planning
- Purchasing & supplies guidance: What materials and tools you need for your classroom and how to use them
- Skills Refreshers: Wheel Throwing or Hand building with a private tutor
